Europcar and insurance scam

Yes, paid for with a Canadian credit card, and a credit card provided on attempted pick up. Canadian address provided on booking.
As this was an airport car rental branch, it is a pretty predictable chance that people booking will not be uk residents, yet still no warning of the 400 quid extra compulsory charge (if I want the car) on pick up. That does not seem even slightly reasonable to me.
Europcar also were recently accused of bonusing staff to encourage damage reporting - that is never going to end well - and they admitted their liability could be £30million for the scandal.
Just so you know who you are dealing with.0 -

This is a bit odd. The normal requirement, which would presumably have been on your voucher, is that either they reserve a deposit on your credit card or you take their insurance.
Was there enough available on your credit card ?
Was their card machine working ?
The voucher is usually so clear that nobody would suggest anything different.0 -

I provided my card on pickup as they said I needed to provide a credit card. Before doing anything with the card, they stated I needed to pay for insurance. I refused. I had already paid for the rental online.
The 'voucher' - the print out from the internet transaction I presume you mean - stated I had already paid for 3rd party liability when i paid online.0 -

While there may be contractual obligations, in Canada I doubt you have the same quirk of law which was found to make card issuers liable.

Good point about the protection under UK credit card law. And europcar have lost my future business and anyone who asks my advice on hire car companies in the UK for sure...0 -

The voucher is the clearest part of your contract. What does it say about providing a credit card ?0
