redeemed xbox gold live to defunct 360 account by accident

hi there my son has done the above. He was activating the email with the code on his laptop and then redeemed it on the laptop instead of on the XBox so now the year's membership is on an old xbox he no longer has.
He has tried to redeem it again on the XBox 1 but it says no such code exists.
I have tried to speak to a virtual agent on Microsoft but don't understand it all and he's tearing his hair out (he lives away)
Is it possible to transfer from the xbox 360 to xbox One? nobody would be able to make use of it on the Xbox 360 as he sold it. thanks

FWIW (for other readers) the account has xbox live, not the xbox360.
If you log into the xbox1 etc. then that will allow you to access xbox live.0
