Floppy Discs

I have lots os old floppy discs that I want to see whats on them and transfer to save if useful.

As none of my laptops have floppy disc drives I do have several taken out of old desktop computers.

Is there a way (ie conversation lead etc.) that I can use these as an external USB device?

I'd just buy a USB floppy drive, they're pretty cheap, for example:

That's interesting. I liked the 'floppys' good for saving letters etc.

When I changed over computers - new base unit didn't except them - saved on CD. Trouble is because Cd capacity is high, it won't download one section - because it's on Word 2003!!

You saying you can't save Word 2003 docs to floppies? I beg to differ.

The version of Word is irrelevant because that functionality of saving to floppies is provided by Windows (where the hardware exists). So all versions of Word from 1 through to 2016 can save on floppy disks. Even Notepad can do it...

If no1catman had trouble saving to floppies, the number one cause of this is that the disk has gone bad, which was surprisingly more common than you'd think.

No, I did not say that!!?

I did say because of going to a new system without a floppy-drive, I save the info on them to CDs.
While the PC will read some of them, it does so only for small files e.g. letters. It won't 'read' a large file (Dissertation with thousands of words).
Though as Neil suggest maybe it has got corrupted.

What you mean is your Word document file was too large for the 1.44MB capacity of the floppy disk.

I was saving Word 2003 docs to floppies in 2004 on a daily basis while doing a college course. :D
