Prepayment Switching Confusion

Options
So we switched our prepayment electricity account from Scottish Power to EDF last month. On the day of the switch there was £3.29 on the meter.

So can anyone help me out with why Scottish Power have sent us a final bill for £16 odds?

There was no debt repayments on the meter and we didn’t owe them any money so I am bafffled.

We have had nothing but bother from Scottish Power since we moved in and this is literally the final straw.

I’ve got ongoing complaints with them about our Gas meter that is going no where and I just can’t face phoning them to query this as well :(:(

Did you give them the meter reading ? :)

I'd say to ask them what that money is actually for.

As far as I'm aware if its a 'key/card' meter NOT a smart meter then the only time they 'see' the reading is when you take the key/card to the shop to top it up as its the only 'external communication' it has.

This is also why you may notice if you have a meter change the engineer will usually write down and / or take photographs of each screen on the display before removing it.

Yip we gave the reading to EDF on the switch day as requested and posted the key card back as. We don’t have smart meters.

If it’s top up and we are not in debt then surely they can’t bill us?

  • Normally the supplier receives a updated meter reading when you put the key in the PAYG meter. Several things could cause a final bill . Main one is if the suppliers tariff changed at some point but the key data didn't so your top up of say £10 should've been for less electric than you got. Be worth calling them to ask for a written breakdown of your PAYG account and the top ups and tariffs charged. Did you usually get Annual statements from them?

Might be better to write to them asking for a written response, they are supposed to record all calls though.
  • There was a price incrase in October, for all PAYG.

If there was a delay in topping up, when the increase took effect, this may account for it. On Key/card meters, the new price is not registered on the meter, until you have topped up and inserted key/card into meter
