Samsung or Amazon Fire?

Depending on what is on offer in the sales, I'm looking to treat myself to a new Tablet, but am unsure if I should stick to Samsung which I have at the moment but 7 inch or give an Amazon Fire a try, which ever I choose I would like to upgrade to a 10 inch. I know that there are differences in them both but other than OS and Alexa are they both pretty similar? also the Fire is £30 cheaper.

Rather depends on what you intend to do with it?

Fire makes it difficult (but not impossible) to put Google services on to the tablet.

You can install Google Play Store on the Fire easily enough:-

    Purely Hardware specification only:

I initially thought the reason why Amazon Fire is so cheap was an incentive to promote Amazon contents services. I have found I was wrong; simply Amazon Fire is very low spec. (Yes, you get what you pay for at this price)

In 2017 standard, as mobile phone display quality is better in terms of size and resolution, I can conservatively say that Amazon 7 inch 600 x 1024 pixels is really bad (~170 ppi density). Amazon Fire HD 8 is completely misleading name, who said 800 x 1280 pixels (~189 ppi density) is HD (High Definition) I also would like to point out that Amazon Fire 7 2017 uses the same screen resolution as Amazon fire 2015 version. No improvement at this aspect

If you don’t intend to use intensive fine text reading or high quality video streaming, probably OK. (but I wonder what else you would do with tablets ?)

Amazon Fires are cheap because of very low spec disposable grade. (Not mention about System Memory is 1GB only for Amazon Fire 7.)

Probably, unless Fire is made by Amazon brand, people won’t buy it.

The problem for Android Tablet is that you really cannot find a good cost/performance one. (Another low spec disposable tablets are made by Lenovo, often sold at Argos.) I ended up to get a second hand NEXUS 7 2013 version (1200 x 1920 pixels, ~323 ppi density, 2GB system memory) I am so happy to get a decent android Tablet. If you can read the specification, you would agree with me.

Due to a spat/tiff between Google and Amazon, you won't be able to access youtube from a fire device, starting in January. This may be a factor in your decision.

That's probably not going to happen as Amazon has started to cave in.
Notwithstanding that, I would go for the Samsung Tablet every time. I have a Samsung 10" tablet, a family member visited last week and had the Amazon Fire.....There is a massive difference in quality and the Samsung was much smoother to use.
It felt a bit more grown up somehow...;)

Consumer electronics standards do. HD is at least 720 pixels top to bottom for TV, so in landscape, that 800 pixels EXCEEDS HD. But is not FULL HD.

I agree, toshi, that the 7 has a low res screen, and that the 8's isn't spectacular, but for £35 or £50 at the Black Friday prices, they really are good value. I've got both, and a 2013 Nexus 7, possibly still the best 7 inch screen. I think people would make do with the Fire screen, for less than half the price!

I do wonder how they would manage to block my (Google Play Store) YouTube app on my Fire tablets...
