Caching thumbnails - windows 10

I've got a few folders with ~5000 photos. I want to look through the folder in thumbnail view so I can pick out the photos I'm interested in, but it takes ages for the thumbnails to load.
I thought they would cache and therefore load much quicker next time, but it still takes ages every time I open the folder. Is there a setting or something on win10 which you can force the folder to cache all the thumbnails? If I right click the folder and got to Customise it's already set to optimise for Pictures.
I know I can get other apps to manage my photos, but I'd rather keep it in explorer if I can.

Anything with 5000 files in it will take a while.
but that being said, the Fall Update of 10 seems to have issues with thumbnails once the file gets over a certain size:

That and the use of Disk Cleanup or the Automatic Maintenance seems to be the main cause.0
