Switching from British Gas

My BG fixed rate is due to expire in January so I ran a couple of price comparisons and found many to be much (about 40%) cheaper, which I sure won't come as a surprise to many.
I currently have a BG smart meter, which I like. My questions (which I apologise has probably been asked dozens of times) are:
How easy is it to switch to other suppliers with smart meter?
Have BG done something to the traditional meter that will need to be undone?
Is there a different suppler I could use who would be able to use the existing BG smart meter?
If I use a different company will they need to come and install anything that will land me with a new charge and potentially wipe out any saving?
I would like to stay on a smart meter if possible as I like seeing what I'm using and saving the hassle of having meters read, but naturally if it was to save me a great deal I would go without - even though it would feel like going against technological progress.
Thanks in advance.

You can switch at will. More than likely - unless you choose Sainsbury’s - your meter will lose its smart communications link and you will have to read it manually. Plans are in train to upgrade your meter by 2020 so that it is no longer BG dependent. If this is not possible, it will be deemed a stranded asset and replaced. This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
