Help an oaf

Pretty basic advice needed.

I need to have some restructuring of my house done, (SWMBO insists.)

I need two bedrooms knocked into one, a kitchen and living area knocked into open plan, and a shower room moved.

The house is a single story, a long rectangle in shape, with none of the internal walls supporting / structural.

So, do I just ask a builder or two for a quote, and explain to them what I need done? Or do I get someone to draw plans? Or what?

Never done this sort of thing before, and totally clueless!

Just phone a (preferably recommended) builder to come and have a look. Or more than one if you want to compare quotes
  • Thanks mate, will do.

Are these builder recommendation sites worth trusting?

In general, no. Far better to ask friends and neighbours for recommendations, or ask on a local community Facebook page if you have one.

And if you tell us where you are in the country someone here may have a recommendation for you.
  • Thanks again. The house is in West Penwith, deepest Cornwall, nearest town Penzance or St Ives.

    Recommendations of builders most welcomed.

  • I've contracted a local lad, who I actually knew before emigrating. Since I left Blighty he's gone solo and has built a good reputation for himself, recommended independently by a couple of friends in the village.

Fingers crossed, he starts in a fortnight.

he starts in fortnight means he's not busy, could be the time of year or could be that he's rubbish. Good builders are normally booked up weeks/months in advance.

It could be that the OP booked him weeks ago, but has only just returned to the thread now.

I for one would not want to be working in freezing conditions.

But it does sound like indoor work.
