The cat / other pet 'bed' area is a good idea
I was going to suggest perhaps depending on its size ( the hamper, not the cat!) it may make a reasonable laundry basket or suchlike ?

I realise that you've solved it now but I have one propped open and planted up with lavender and pelargoniums on a seat near the front door. It's weathering nicely and looks lovely throughout the summer.The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
