I have just moved house and my new house is currently with British Gas for both gas and electricity. I obviously want to switch supplier to a better deal but do I need to sign up with the British Gas first (on a non-contracted tariff presumably) then switch or can I just sign up straight away with the new supplier?

Yes you have to sign up with BG and give them meter readings.
Then you can switch but as you say make sure the BG tariff has no exit fees.

After the switch you will receive a final bill from BG for the energy used in those few weeks.

The question that OP raises comes up many times on this Forum both from owner occupiers and tenants. Do not Estate Agents/Builders/Landlords etc give any guidance ?

I’ve moved house quite a lot and dealt with many different lettings agents and you’re generally lucky if they tell you who your current supplier is let alone anything else. I guess they just assume you’ll stick with the old supplier rather than switching.
