Crossword e-book. Is there such a thing?

My husband is not a reader but spends hours doing Times crosswords.
I am looking for some sort of crossword gadget to take on holiday so that we can save baggage allowance (not a crossword clue finder). Something that does not need wi-fi all the time as its not available on the beach. I appreciate that he'd have to buy and download crosswords to the gadget. I can't seem to find anything like this unless my search terms are too vague.
Please does anyone know of such a thing?

Does he already have a tablet or large screen phone (phablet)? If yes then why not get an app for that device?

I'm showing my age here - I never think of apps.
Yes, I have an old Kindle Fire that he could use.
I'll check out the link you've given me, thank you very much.0 -
There was a whole host of these in the 90s and 00s - electronic handheld crossword puzzles. Having a look now and there's not much available. As above, a smartphone or tablet will allow the ability to use crossword apps. Battery power will be limited.
I thought the Amazon Kindle might do crosswords but can't seem to find any useful info.0 -

TBH, as techie as I am, I think this is one of the times that an old fashioned paperback book of crosswords is the best tool for the job. Stick it in a pocket & it won't count for weight allowance and will work without wifi & in bright sunlight and he can scribble in the margins to his hearts content0 -

You might think that, others would beg to differ.

A quick Google will lead to results that show you how to get Google Play onto a Kindle Fire. I know it works because I have done it myself. (They key is to get the right initial versions of the Google Services Framework, Play Store etc.)
If I remember once I'm home I'll post up the versions I used. All you do is copy them to the Fire then install them in a specific order. When you come to run the Play store app it'll then request relevant updates automatically. Thereafter you'll be able to install most apps from the Play store.

OK Thanks.
Had a quick google. This may well be beyond me but the kids will be home for Christmas, I'm sure they won't have a problem.0 -
