Best way to cancel Union membership?

Options
Hi all

I am a member of Unite, but want to leave. Since our union rep got hounded out of the workplace there is really no benefit to being a paid member.

Would it be possible to just cancel my direct debit through my online banking?

There seems to be no option to cancel online, I have sent emails to my regional office, but no reply.

Thanks

Whilst you are at it, you could save more money by canceling all your insurance policies. There's really no benefit in insurance to being insured since there hasn't been a house fire on your street in two decades, and nobody in the family ever crashed their car or fell sick on holiday.

When it's you that is hounded out of the workplace, you might regret your decision...

Are you sure about that? I had a complex employment issue about 16 years ago. It was too complicated for our local reps so it was handled by the regional office. Their advice and support was great and they made the problem go away.

Some local reps are good, some, unfortunately, not so good. A union is more than just a local rep.

As there's no union rep now might be the ideal time for you to take on the job yourself rather than leaving the union altogether.

If the previous rep found their position untenable it would be taking up a poisoned chalice wouldn't it. How much support did the previous rep get from higher up in the union? Was there more to it than just the fact that the person was a union rep?

There are many unknowns here, but if the union isn't responding to e-mails one has to question how much help they would be if push came to shove.

When I retired I e-mailed my union to say I was leaving and received a response within a couple of days to ask why.

    a) The union is Unite, the UK's biggest union, so I'd be pretty confident that the support is there.

    b) If the previous rep succumbed to pressure from the employer then perhaps what is needed is a rep with the backbone to stand up to that pressure - and with the whole of Unite behind them that should be possible.

As I said before, we don't know the full circumstances. However, if the rep was forced out there were obviously problems either with his/her ability to stand up for themself, or with the support from those higher up the union totem pole. We have no way of knowing which is nearer the truth.
If I was in the position of seeing the previous rep forced out I wouldn't want to take on the job.
