Two unknown transfers to my bank account.

Ok so this is my first every post so please be nice to me.

So I checked my bank today and found I had a lot more than I was expecting to see, on investigation found two TRANSFERS not PAYMENTS to me on the 04/12/17 one for £1,137 and the other for £378, no other information accept it says “£X) has been TRANSFERRED to your account and a RPxxxxxxx reference number.
I have checked a payment I received from a friend and it shows as a payment not a transfer.

I’m of the understanding that a transfer is between accounts that I hold and a payment is from someone else.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance ✌️

I’m not sure whether the distinction that you’ve made between transfer and payment is necessarily correct but that’s immaterial. You need to contact your bank as soon as is practical and tell them that you do not recognise these transactions. They should be able to provide further details and if you still don’t recognise them you should instruct them to return the funds.

Do what Ballard says, but if you tell us which bank it is we may be able to determine whether your differentiation between payment and transfer is indeed correct.

And be very careful if anyone contacts you saying that they've accidentally sent it and asking you to transfer it back. The only absolutely safe way is to leave the transferring of the money to your bank - they can double check that there is no funny business going on.
