You can download areas anytime you want. I think you can plan a route and there is an option to download map data along the route. Have a play with your phone.

    - Open Maps
    - press the 3 lines to the left of the search bar
    - Offline maps
    - Select your own map

means nothing in this context as it is totally down to the will/financial stability of the company.

i bought a screwdriver (£10) from snapon in 1984. the handle snapped a couple of years ago. when i went back to snapon for a replacement i was told it had broken in the wrong place. the franchise had been taken on by another person and i wasn't a regular customer. the company ignored my emails. every chance i get now i rubbish snapon.

It means a LOT in this context. As i mentioned there are threads on here where people have expected lifetime updates to be sold sorry your hardware is too old.

Updates being larger than the devices storage has been mentioned a few times. try fitting a 700mb map file on a device with only 500mb of storage. So its lifetime has ended prematurely, no more updates.

I agree with this. People were sold lifetime maps upgrade plan from TomTom, were left high and dry and no upgrade path, or discount to newer models. hey could have split the uk maps into regions to fit

I am a waze fan, but sometimes its plotting its reroute to a faster path is actually slower by taking you on an adjacent road for a short distance then back to the same main road again. I do miss the programmable tomtom type points of interest like speed cameras

Phones have assisted gps, and I do find the bespoke gps device ones better.

However after the map scam... it is free phone apps and maps for me.

This happened to me with my Garmin the map updates got to big for the device it has Western Europe at street level and the major roads of the rest of the world. I only need UK not the streets of Norway nor the motorways of Japan. Thankfully it can take a micro-sd card up to 8GB in size so it was cheap to add memory. Here's what Garmin states for Lifetime Maps. https://www.garmin.com/en-GB/legal/lmdisclaimer
