Windscreen Cover

Hi all,

Had a chip in my windscreen (that I was unaware of) that spread to a crack. This was horizontal and about 3ft long between both A-pillars.

I booked an online appointment with AutoGlass today for next Sunday (Christmas Eve  ) and wondered when I will pay the excess that is on my insurance. Do I need to get in touch with them at all, or will the glass company sort it all out?

Thanks in advance.

Last one I had, I paid the excess to autoglass.

Remember that a window claim is a declarable claim for the next x number of years.

  • That makes sense.

Yeah, I figured that, now just running it over in my head whether or not it's worth claiming for...

Get a quote from a local windscreen repair company before telling you insurer - it may be cheaper to just pay yourself- or is it too late to keep insurance out of the picture if you already contacted autoglass?

I do think it'll work out cheaper through the insurance. Is it likely that my car insurance quotes for next year may take a slight increase because of this claim or not?

You can find out what difference this claim makes by doing dummy quotes now online with and without this claim in your history (but if they already know about it, then you will have to disclose this as a loss anyway even if you pay for it yourself)

Premiums may be affected for up to 5 years depending on how long a history the insurer asks for

Your policy will tell you who the excess is paid to, sometimes it's the insurer and sometimes it's the glass company (and sometimes it's someone else altogether, IIRC one of my glass claims was dealt with by a third party contracted by the insurer, who then arranged for the glass company to visit).
