Credit Check Done, Services Withdrawn. Rights?

Options
Relative has excellent credit rating. Recently signed to new entertainment provider and once order placed for services they agree to credit check, which passes. All is good.

New provided then decides (and doesn't tell new customer) that one service (telephone) they cannot provide because of availability - there is none in this area.

Relative cancels contract, but what are there rights on getting credit check removed from file, because provider knew (long story) they couldn't provide services offered and agreed to before credit check carried out.

Relative will now choose alternative supplier who will need to carry out further credit check, potentially damaging credit file for several months as two checks done in short time)

  • You could ask.

But don't worry about a couple of searches. It will have minimal impact and certainly not lasting for several months.

    Hi WestQueen,

All you can do in a situation like this is complain. The complaint would need to go to the relevant provider and if they refuse to remove the search then you can escalate the matter to the either the Telecommunications Ombudsman or CISAS (depending who they are regulated by).

I would also mention that this type of search would've likely been a soft search and is unlikely to leave a long or damaging footprint but if the person concerned is unhappy they should complain.

Complaint has gone in post today and have asked this, and also referred to CISAS if they fail to do what I am asking. I think what annoys me more as earlier this year, a rep sneakily carried out a credit check on this relative without telling him, just asked for name, date of birth etc. at the front door when trying to get residents to sign up when services were being installed in the area over the summer. I did complain back then and got the search removed, it was a hard search (I saw on file) and the company apologised.

Thanks for that, recently a search was done last month for a bank account switch also, and a few months ago for a credit card.
