I was probably on that one too. :rotfl:

It seems to be a common subject for this board and I still don't understand why it's so hard for people to grasp how eating out works.

Well at least with our tipping culture, if you get bad service then you don't leave the 10 or 12% that you otherwise would have done.

If people who wanted restaurant charges to be all inclusive had their way, you wouldn't have such an easy remedy.

We have complained about slow service before ( at the time) and had a reduction in the , usually the delayed course not charged for.

W have also sent food back when it was cold, or a tough steak, or undercooked food. We have never had a problem doing this and a replacement meal was given.

Your right is to complain at the time, not once you've stayed and put up with the bad service or unsuitable meal.

Restaurant charges are all inclusive; the cost of the food includes the cost of the wages paid to the staff who are paid to provide good service to the customers.

If your suggesting that the waiting staff are not paid to provide good service then what do you think they are being paid to do exactly?

OK what about I'm gluten-free and go to an establishment I have attended before to have a Sunday roast. I know they do it gluten-free as I have attended it before without any problem. However today I order the roast and they bring it to me without any gravy and tell me they don't have any gravy that's gluten free today. Don't you think they should have told me that before making the meal so I could change to have something else? I personally don't like bone dry roast dinners. But instead of telling me, they instead went ahead and cooked it and served it to me. I can now request a different meal and eat separately to the rest of my group and wait a long time before I end up actually eating. Is this not bad service?

If it were me I would have asked if they had the GF gravy to go with the roast, if no gravy then order something else.

    Hello,

Recently I have noticed I seem to experience a lot of bad service when I eat out in restaurants. This includes service that is mildly inconvenient - such as very slow service to the extent where you have to go and find waitresses to serve you after waiting so long even though the venue is relatively empty.

    How long is "so long"?

It is subjective. I personally like a long wait for the most part, because you can have a chinwag with the people you are with. But some people like short time frames.

It is hard to judge what is long and what is acceptable.
And service that is just horrendous - such as the manager hammering shelves while we have our coffee in a tiny venue so the noise was so loud we were unable to have a conversation.

Why was the manager doing this?

When did it start? Before or after you arrived?
    Everytime,

How many times has it happened?

Unless the manager deliberately does it, the banging seems an isolated incident.

If the service is slow then you shouldn't be going back to the venue in the first place (and if you are receiving slow service in multiple places then I'd do some self reflection to see whether the problem could be your expectations).
I understand if the service is bad I don't necessarily need to pay service charge.

Is the service charge a tip which is chucked on?

If so, you can take it off irrespective of whether the quality is good or bad. In fact, I'd encourage you to do so and then tip what you feel is worthy.
But can I refuse to pay for part of the meal?
    Thanks

No you can't. You ate the food so you need to pay for it.

    What a ridiculous thread.

If you eat the steak you pay for the steak. If you don't like the look of it, Send it back and leave! You don't eat something then complain...

No one forces you to go to any restaurant. Cook at home if you don't like them!
