Yes other peoples washing smells totally different mainly in a bad way too lol. If you haven't experienced the bad way yet then be prepared hehehe.

:D Oh yes I've had bad ones too!! I had 13kg of bedding from someone that looked and smelled like it had been screwed up in a ball for a year!

It's mostly foisty smelling I get tho!

Trust me you will lol Not everyone washes like we do love. I can iron a weeks worth of my own stuff in half an hour where as the same amount of a customers can take over a hour.

I'm midway through a smokey smelling load right now, got another load to do which is usually the same. Worst thing with the next one is they have kids clothes and the kids clothes usually smell all smokey too :(.

Also pet hairs are a pet hate of mine (pardon the pun!).

I got myself some masks off ebay to cover nose and mouth, not sure if it helps or not but at least it limits the dust inhalation!

  • Hi,

Just a quickie - do you iron up and down, or 1 direction only? Just realised that when I do the iron backwards seems to be when I iron little kinks into the clothes. So am I best to iron one direction only?!

Blimey, I never think about a thing when I do my own ironing, I just get on with it and get it done in a reasonable length of time and it looks ok! I really over analyse other peoples!

We hate smokers ironing as we are non smokers we usually leave them till last orders so they don't make other customers clothes stink.

We do have a dog but she's not allowed in the ironing room with us. We get clothes covered in cat fur which im allergic to :( I sneeze really bad with it.

Directional wise iron up then turn your iron around and with the other hand (to get your practise) iron down again lol.

That is a big big problem over analysing too much just get it done time is money chop chop :D

  • surely its better to give customers receipts, then you have a copy yourself to save for the tax form at the end of the year.....or is it easier to just keep a notebook of how much you have earnt per week?

am going on one of these Business Link workshops next week to see how to set up my own business.......will pass any good tips onto you afterwards;)

We use a note pad with the number of items on and the price then we have a big diary that we input the prices into every week and book people into. Saves all the little bits of paper all the time.

If you are collecting/delivering do remember to keep fuel receipts too :)

Yes I use a duplicate book that's got a summary at the front. I transfer it onto a spreadsheet then that I calculate the mileage and other costs etc automatically.

You just reminded me of something I meant to ask the group - can you offset electricity etc from your income? I work from home but don't have a specific room (though tend to use the conservatory when it's warm!).

I'd obviously like to offset as much as I can from my profits so the tax man doesn't take more than he should!!
  • Thank-you all for your helpful advice this week. :)

Just a quick question, do you all use wraps for certain garments as read items can go mouldy, any suggestion please.
