Well, that's weird, I have just received my replacement Debit card (old one expired due to date) and it is the SAME number, as have been all my replacement cards for years. Did you cancel the card and have replacements due to fraudulent activity for example?

I have gotten the same number before (when expiry date was reached) but when I changed to my married name is was a different number. In either case refunds have worked online at least to the new card.
finally tea total but in still in (more) debt (Oct 25 CC £1800, loan £6453, mortgage £59,924/158,000)
  • I had a similar problem at Go Outdoors. They wouldn't refund my card as the original purchasing card had been lost and cancelled, and my replacement card had a different card number.

When they told me this I thought I was going to have a problem! But the supervisor who was called was very helpful and offered a refund in cash which I accepted.

AIUI stores have to refund in the same medium that payment was made (including same card number) unless the customer agrees to another method.

Usually shops like to refund to the same card as they get the transaction fees returned from their merchant provider. This was the case (or I was lead to believe) when I was a supervisor at a now defunct high street chain.

Not too sure if this is the case when you have a replacement card on the same account. The refund would technically go through on any card unless their systems have been specifically set up to only allow same card number to be processed.

    Well...

Slightly different scenario, but I used to work in a bookmakers in my youth. I had someone come in once trying to place a £200 bet in cash and they were rushing me. I used a marker pen on the notes and it was 50-50 whether they were fake or not (the line was quite bright). I called the police (it was a very rough shop and fraud/drugs/violence was rife) and retained the notes until police confirmed they weren't fake.

Work never liked me after that moment because I had put off one of the regular punters (their horse lost btw + they got loads of free bets for the inconvenience, so worked out well for them!), DESPITE THE FACT that I followed money laundering rules to the letter.

I reckon they also thought of me as a "poorly trained" cashier :) Although funnily enough, I never had any offer of further training in relation to money laundering ;) (in complete fairness though, I did need training in regards to telling whether the marker pen indicated fake notes or not)

    My point is:

Respect money laundering rules and regulations, even if it appears that someone innocent (like OP) occasionally get caught in the crossfire. The manager in OP's case actually directed OP to obtain proof from bank about the recent change, so they weren't as jobsworthy/inflexible as I was!! Things could always be worse!

If I was in OP's shoes, I would have gone straight to my bank and obtained the proof. Then go back in speak to the very same manager and say, "hey man, here's a bank statement with the long number" or "hey man, here's a letter from the bank confirming that it was my old card" etc. If you do that without having an attitude then hey presto, the refund will be done for you! Simple solutions for simple problems.

I think I was ralter relaxed about it actually. Just imagine the scenario where I was not just returning a faulty item but part of an organised crime racket buying up fairy lights from all over London and returning them to Argos one at a time to shift money from my dodgy bank account into my less dodgy bank account.

Well, it isn't all about being part of an organised crime racket. You could also be a relative/friend who steals the item + receipt and then tries to blag a refund via an alternative payment method. At an educated guess I would say that a compulsive gambler/druggie would be one possibility for this sort of thing.

Plus, many similar frauds focus on high value items which are more closely monitored. It would be much easier to commit fraud with lower value items and you may find the odd fraudster who recognises this fact to make it easier.

So yea, very far-fetched in individual circumstances (your case) but not completely unbelievable. The best solution is to just play the game + get the proof as requested.

The OP has the receipt so not sure why you think they do not have proof. The issue is that the card number is different on the receipt to what they have in front of them.

Well its academic now but it is possible to have receipt for something you didn't buy.
