Want to renovate a plaster fireplace

I have a newish house and want to renovate or somehow upgrade the fireplace which is white plaster with an ornate design that is totally out of keeping with the rest of the house. I can't afford to replace it. Any suggestions?

Being plaster you should be able to shape it (an incredible amount of sanding), how good you are at that will dictate the look and quality. You could also fill (plaster filler) any ornate features to try and reduce the impact although might have issues getting new plaster to stick to paint.
Id probably suggest trying to deal with it until you can replace the surround though (can easily be had for less than £100 and plenty get sold on ebay/facebook buy swap sell's).0
