Cancelled TalkTalk account 2 years ago, got a letter from a debt collector yesterday!

Hi all, any help would be appreciated.
In April 2015, I cancelled my TalkTalk account, the person on the phone told me that the contract was over and I was to ignore any further messages from them. I paid the last bill and thought nothing of it. I moved out of that property and received no further communication from them.
Yesterday I got a letter through from a debt collecting agency about my TalkTalk account. I have not yet contacted the agency or TalkTalk, as I have been trying to figure out what is best to do first.
My bills from TalkTalk used to be £56, so I'm absolutely terrified that they havent cancelled the account?!
What should I do?

I think you need to contact the agency or TalkTalk but you knew that already didn't you.0

Although it's best not to assume anything with TT, hopefully they did cancel your account and although they misinformed you that your account was closed with nothing else to pay, it may just be a final bill that's not been paid
...how much are the debt chasing company saying you owe ?, and is it broken down into to original debt and what they add on for administration ?...the best thing to do is contact the company and ask what the debit is for, and how the figure they say you owe is broken down.0 -
I think the first answer given was clear and concise.
Contact TalkTalk and ask them.
Your final bill should be labelled as "Final Bill" as well.
How were you paying your bills?
As you received them or by DG
If DD, did you cancel the DD with the bank yourself?0 -

As I answered your question as asked you're welcome.
If you just wanted 'disgusted of Dagenham' type replies you should have said.0 -

The only people who can tell you what went wrong and resolve it is Talktalk. We can't do anything from here, we don't have crystal balls. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
This is another case where you should record your call or request it in writing.
My preferred method is record the call and save it..i use Call recorder pro from Google app store.its free and has saved me huge issues,Virgin being the latest who lied through there teeth to cisas about a new contract, only to be left red faced when i sent the recording of the conversation and the utter lies told by Virgin.
The only people who have issues with calls being recorded are those who are not willing to stand by what they have said.0
