Accident claim. It wasn't him as he wasn't there?

Hi,

I am posting this on behalf of my girlfriend’s dad.

His insurance company have written to him asking him to fill out the details of an accident he was supposedly in. Somebody has made a claim, probably based on his registration number, and said he was involved in an accident.

The issues are:

1: It wasn’t him or even his car.

2: The accident was hundreds of miles away. It supposedly happened near Newquay (South West) and he lives in the North West of England. He wasn't anywhere near at the time, and I mean within a 300 hundred mile radius of it !

The details we have at the moment are sketchy so we are waiting for a more accurate description of the incident from his insurers. i.e. What vehicle was it? What Colour was it? Description of driver? We are thinking at the moment that the driver has taken down an incorrect registration number or worse case, His car may have been cloned or someone is using copies of his registration plates.

As you can guess this is bit of a problem but what can we do? Has anyone had any similar experiences?

Yes ive had exactly the same thing, despite me obviously phoning my ins.co(Churchill) they still kept sending me letters (3in all) asking for details, the really annoying thing is that it still shows as a claim against me. even though i have a protected bonus-their answer to this is "dont worry its only a formality!
  • Hi there,
I think that some of these claims are bogus for sure.

Apparently claiming for accidents that have never happened is big business, and the police have caught gangs operating in the UK doing just this.
They have also been caught making accidents happen, by braking hard and claiming from an innocent driver when they have been hit from behind. This loses the average paying customer £40 on their premiums.

Is the insurance company one you have heard of before?

    Hi again,

Thanks for the replies so far.

My girlfriend's dad is still waiting for his own insurance company to send him details of the incident. All he knew about it was a letter came from his own insurance co asking him to fill out a form the accident he was involved in.

He called them up and apparently someone is making a claim against him.

I think you can trace people's insurance companies etc quite easily through DVLA nowadays as it's all linked together so there was no need to contact him direct. We will see what the postman brings in the next few days if the strikes ever end.
