Might be hard to deny pay motivation when your previous salary is on your application form,I wouldn't broadcast it and I'd have other motivations but I wouldn't say it wasn't a factor

The interviewer is not an idiot. The interviewer took his job because it paid more than his last one, and knows that you are just the same. If he asks the question it is simply to see whether you have had the sense to prepare a plausible lie. Any plausible lie will do; they will not really listen to it and certainly won't believe it.
It's the same as the "weaknesses" question. Nobody actually expects you to tell them your weaknesses. It's a test of whether you have done basic preparation for the interview. If you haven't prepared for the interview you are likely not to prepare for things you have to do in the job.0 -
