Can we rescue this toaster?

The “down” lever will no longer stay down once the bread has been added into the toasting slots but immediately springs back up again.
Is there any easy way this can be rectified or is the machine now permanently non repairable? Alas, am not a DIY expert and I guess no electrician would consider it worth touching although I’m reluctant to throw an otherwise good toaster away.

I think if I was so reluctant to replace it I'd stand there holding down the lever, peering into the slot to see when the toast was ready, then releasing it and removing the toast.0

There is usually a solenoid mechanism to keep the bread holder in the down position - which is why toasters usually don't stay 'down' when the power is switched off. (I assume you've checked the power is on by holding the lever down?)
It is a relatively simple fault to investigate and possibly fix, but like most small appliances now it is almost impossible to find anyone who will do repairs, and if you do, what they need to charge to make a living far exceeds the cost of simply buying a new item.
You might want to check in the local area to see if there is an appliance repair company (small independent retailers are the most likely) and ask them for an idea of cost, but don't be disappointed if they say it is not worthwhile."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
sometimes crumbs and bit of bread get stuck and stop the 'down ' lever from working. Take toaster outside and holding it upside down, give it a really good shake for a minute or so - you will be amazed at what is dislodged..... and hopefully that might do the trick0
