Hotpoint washing machine making high-pitched whine. Is this normal?

I bought a new washer a couple of weeks ago, a Hotpoint WMJLL742P.

It makes a high-pitched whining noise, quite loudly, on every cycle. Also, on a 60C wash yesterday the door glass was very hot during the final spin cycle.

My old washer was a Hotpoint and wasn't like this, but it was quite old. Is any of this normal?

  • The brushes on a new motor tend to whine until they've worn to match the radius of the commutator. Doesn't the door glass have a plastic guard in front of it?

If the glass is hot during the final spin then you have plumbed it into the hot supply instead of the cold.

I find modern washing machines make very different noises compared to old ones - in part due to different wash cycle design, different construction methods, and also generally lower build quality.

It might just be that it sounds different to what you expect a washing machine to sound like. Give it a couple of weeks and then see what you think.

Do you know how long it usually takes then for the brushes to bed in? There isn't a plastic guard in front of the glass.

It just doesn't sound normal to me. There are 27 reviews of this model on the John Lewis website, none mention it being noisy, and some actually say it's quiet.

I'm thinking I'll get it replaced. Had it less than 30 days so John Lewis will swap it.

Depends how much you use it, a couple of months perhaps. Mine was quite whiny when it was new.
