Marketing, communications, PR are all related to advertising if that's the field where your creativity lies. Work either for an agency, or in-house.

Alternatively, find a sales job which pays commission as well as a basic wage - then your extra efforts are rewarded.

But get used to the idea that employers want maximum effort for minimum pay. It's called capitalism, and is generally balanced by employees who want maximum pay for minimum effort...

So... I need to get this out of my chest. I really don’t like my job and I can’t take it anymore.

I’m a 26 years old who used to work in advertising but then realized his passion is not that. Right now I really don’t know what to do, other than I’m a fairly creative person and I’d like to do something creative.

I’m working as a part-time sales assistant in London for a brand that sells luxury stuff. It’s just 3 days a week, meaning that I’ve 4 days off every week. That’s not bad, because I’ve lots of free time to spend with my girlfriend (we live together) and work on whatever I want.

The problem is that I’m really miserable doing this job, even if it’s just 3 days per week. I’m wasting my time by selling thousand of pounds worth of stuff and making this company richer and richer. All of this for minimum wage.

I’m really tired of hearing about “targets” every morning and how everyone wants to sell more and more and more. My manager gets really happy every time we hit the target, and I’m like “you’re not getting any more money for this... who cares?”.

I think it’s time to build something for me. I’m not doing this for a company that pays me £7.20/hr, especially in one of the most expensive cities in the world. If it wasn’t illegal to pay people less, I’m sure they’ll pay us £2/hr.

I’m sorry for the rant but I really can’t find any motivation on what I’m doing right now.

EDIT: I had a temporary contract with an advertising agency and after that I didn’t want to continue that path and I’ve just looked for a part-time job, so that I could work on my personal projects.

I didn’t leave a well-paid, skilled job for working as a sales assistant.

1: Some people take professional pride in the role
2: maybe the manager is on a commission?
3: Why are you not paid £7.50 /hr?...
4: Minimum wage is a shambles. But for the exact point you raised. If people are willing to do the job for Min/Living wage, that's what they get paid. If they weren't the company would have to pay more...
  • Everyone and his dog thinks they are "creative". If you were creative you'd be able to work out for yourself what you wanted to do. Instead you want to be led by the hand.
  • If you don't like it either work out what sort of job you do want or think of a business idea and set up on your own. Either of these should be easy for someone who is obviously so creative and hard working, there is a third option which is to step up and realise that work is mostly boring and pointless but it pays us money so we can live, if you want more money then you will have to work for it.
  • Everyone has been in this position before where they hate the job they're doing. The only thing we can say to you is either find another job or just stick it out and hope things get better. If you haven't told us what sort of thing you're interested in, we can't really help you. All I can say is that if I was you, I would not leave your current job until you have a position elsewhere. You don't want to be in a position where you have no money. Good luck!
