I cant handle my job anymore

So... I need to get this out of my chest. I really don’t like my job and I can’t take it anymore.

I’m a 26 years old who used to work in advertising but then realized his passion is not that. Right now I really don’t know what to do, other than I’m a fairly creative person and I’d like to do something creative.

I’m working as a part-time sales assistant in London for a brand that sells luxury stuff. It’s just 3 days a week, meaning that I’ve 4 days off every week. That’s not bad, because I’ve lots of free time to spend with my girlfriend (we live together) and work on whatever I want.

The problem is that I’m really miserable doing this job, even if it’s just 3 days per week. I’m wasting my time by selling thousand of pounds worth of stuff and making this company richer and richer. All of this for minimum wage.

I’m really tired of hearing about “targets” every morning and how everyone wants to sell more and more and more. My manager gets really happy every time we hit the target, and I’m like “you’re not getting any more money for this... who cares?”.

I think it’s time to build something for me. I’m not doing this for a company that pays me £7.20/hr, especially in one of the most expensive cities in the world. If it wasn’t illegal to pay people less, I’m sure they’ll pay us £2/hr.

I’m sorry for the rant but I really can’t find any motivation on what I’m doing right now.

EDIT: I had a temporary contract with an advertising agency and after that I didn’t want to continue that path and I’ve just looked for a part-time job, so that I could work on my personal projects.

I didn’t leave a well-paid, skilled job for working as a sales assistant.

  • I take it you don’t want to go back into advertising? Do you want to follow another creative path or have you no idea what you want to do?

So what are you working on during your 4 days off a week? You say you're "creative" but that covers a multiplicity of fields - writing, art, photography, games design, sculpture ...... what is your particular area of interest/expertise? Any qualifications?

look at some job sites , pick out a few jobs that appeal to you , look at what qualifications/skills they are asking for and spend some of those four days off trying to acquire same
the McJob should seem more bearable if you're doing something about getting out of it

Everyone's had a job they hate, all you can do is figure out what you would rather do and go and do it.

As for feeling passion about their job, very very few people do, most of us settle for just liking, lots of people never get that far.
  • I've had a few jobs I hate but felt trapped because I had a child and household bills to pay so was restricted a bit by that. You are young and by the fact you are working part time on min wage seem not to need / want money that much. That gives you a very big pool of jobs to apply for. Ensure your CV is looking good and try to turn the current job into a positive. Its paying you and can go on your CV. Customer service experience is a good thing to have on a CV particularly with demanding high end customers!
Maybe spend some of your free time getting experience in a field that interests you. Sort of like an intern.
What about marketing / communications? The fact you are in London will give you many places to approach. I'd even look at local authority jobs. They usually pay OK with good pensions and there are lots of London borough councils to check out.

If you don't want to make money for capitalists, then what about looking for employment in the Third Sector (that means charities, community groups, campaigning organisations etc)? You've got time on your hands, and a good place to start is volunteering. There are literally hundreds of thousands of employers in the sector - from large household names to small groups nobody has heard of outside the immediate area of interest. Certainly big enough of a sector to make a whole career out of. You may never be wealthy (although wages are comparable to other sectors) but you will have the chance to come home from work most days feeling you did something worth doing! Like any other sector, there are bad days and bad employers - but mostly not!

Lots of people are unhappy at work. You have two choices
A, shut up & put up
B, find a job you do like - maybe in the public sector if you object to making companies richer. Maybe providing a service that makes a difference to lives.

If you only work 3 days a week on min wage, what else do you live on? Pay the rent with.
