Train Compensation

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums but have been viewing MSE for quite some time so hopefully you guys might be able to help.

I've just tried to catch my train home for the evening but unfortunately it was cancelled and it was the last train home for the evening. I was travelling on the return leg of my journey between Nailsea and Backwell station and Bristol Temple Meads.

My return ticket was £4.50, but in the end to get home, I had to pay for a taxi which cost £22. Can I claim any compensation for This?

Thanks in advance for your help

Was the taxi arranged for you by station staff (if there were any around that is)?

You can certainly claim your train fare back.

Worth trying for the taxi. Emphasize that Yatton is unstaffed in the evening so there was no one to assist

Where did Yatton come into it?

Even at nearly midnight at Temple Meads there will have been a few staff about. Did you speak to any member of staff?

Was the taxi organised by them? There will have been plenty of other affected passengers so I doubt you were the only one.

If the taxi wasn't organised by them then things get a little more tricky.

I'm assuming you have receipts? As well as your normal train fair compensation c;laim I would write a polite and concise letter to customer services explaining the situation and enclosing copies of your receipt and tickets. Twitter may also be of use. They are not obliged to pay your losses.

We did ask at the station, the chap who was at the ticket barriers just said there is nothing that can be done and that we would just need to complain online.

The taxis at Bristol are normally quite expensive so I used Uber so have access to a receipt online.
I messaged Great Western Railway on Facebook and they have provided me with an email address to send the details to. They have advised that they may cover the taxi fare as a gesture of goodwill

A gesture of goodwill to cover up for their lazy member of staff who incorrectly told you there is nothing that could be done.

Why do train companies specialise in employing such useless staff?

    Quite.

I would definitely be mentioning the Staff's incorrect information in communications regarding any refund.
