At least you can't do it by accident.

    True.

Although, if I had one having seen that I'd be sorely tempted to go through the process then phone them up because the gearbox wasn't working and see how long it took them to suss it :D

  • I don't believe for a second only Toyota can replace the clutch. My Toyota IQ's clutch went in 2016, and was replaced by the local garage for £700. Getting the job done by Toyota is going to be eyewatering. The only job I've been told that requires the dealer was my airbag light, which was down to an electric/car design fault.

Was that a MMT gearbox though?
From what I understand, the clutch change is no different to any other because, as already stated, this is a manual gearbox and clutch but operated by actuators and electronics.
It's the electronic bit that is the problem because the "learning" can only be carried out by plugging in Toyota specific equipment.
The op's clutch might, a big might, only need a relearn/reset.
Just as an aside, I owned a Yaris with a MMT and that transmission is absolute garbage. I'm sure the reason they now use a CVT is partly a result of many owner complaints, including my own.:p

Pleased to report that DH drove the car carefully out to the garage on Tuesday morning. Of course despite being told when I booked that it would be fixed the same day (how can they possibly know that??? the people making the bookings are in a call centre!!!), they didn't have the parts in so said they'd strip it down then, and have it ready for us by lunchtime today. Which they did, AND sent someone to pick DH up, which was a great help because it's a long bus journey to somewhere about a mile from the garage!

Yes, it was expensive, but given the price GothicStirling paid last year I don't feel it was unreasonable.

Update. Car has been fine over Christmas, got us to London and back.

Then yesterday heading off to a pub a few miles away, the engine once again started racing and not changing up.

The garage say take it in, they'll need to keep it for a couple of days, but they are giving us a courtesy car.

Really hoping it's not too serious ...

Sounds like the bite-point learning procedure wasn't carried out properly, or there's an actuator issue.

My 90 year old Aunt had to stop driving. I sold her 2008 Yaris D4D MMT in April 2017 about 36000m on it. My old neighbour bought it, didnt like it and after 1m traded it in.
It went to auction and a dealer bought it. The gearbox then failed with the new owner who paid well over the odds for the car in London.
Thankfully it didnt fail with the neighbour I sold it to, I wasn't aware of a fault but it would have been awkward.
The purchaser in London phoned my aunt and neighbour re the fault even though it was nowt to do with them.
Must be an inherent design fault with these gearboxes.

Interesting. doing a quick google, as one does when people use long and unfamiliar words, I found this.

So if we don't get a satisfactory response from Toyota, worth contacting this crew? They have a dealer not too far away.

I've felt that the car has lacked 'welly' since we got it back. I haven't worried about it because it seemed sensible not to push for too much 'welly', but when it raced I have to say I wasn't particularly surprised ...

It's certainly worth giving them a try, the likelihood that they know more than the main dealers is fairly high.
