Ideas for 'bland' Food

  • Had terrible nausea as a result of antibioticd last year and for about a week afterwards I lived off the following:

Plain biscuits (rich t and digestives are particularly good for settling the stomach)
    Ginger ale
    Bread/toast spread thinly with honey
Ready salted crisps (the baked ones seemed to make me feel less sick than the ones cooked in oil)
    Plain pasta and peas
Plain baked chicken breast with inside of a baked potato

Ginger is particularly good for nausea and ginger ale (Canada dry) is always my go to when I'm feeling sick . Eating little and often is definitely better than a couple of big meals.

I cook sometimes for a friend with a different medical issue, but similar effect!
I suggest trying coconut milk for quite a few things. my friend finds he likes the sweetness of it.
I have just made a risotto for very small people: chicken, peas, rice, cooked with coconut milk. If you tolerate that, you could add (as I do) a cinnamon stick and some lime leaves - both removed before eating - that add a background flavour, but no immediate spiciness.
I also suggest trying pineapple - juice or fruit - as it is one of the few fruits easily tolerated by people with mouth ulcers - but of course, everyone is different!
And thanks moneyetc! I don't like bananas myself and had forgotten what a good, simple ice cream they can make, so will remember it for the little people in my life (and kitchen)!

I was going to suggest semolina until I saw you had issues with dairy but wonder whether it could be made up with either water or possibly apple juice? You could of course try something like Almond Milk for making rice puddings, semolina or porridge type meals.

Maybe look at dairy-free protein shakes or meal replacement powders for the moment, if you're struggling with meals. Makes it easy and protein will help with hunger too - you might miss the 'solid' part of a meal but protein tends to fill you up for longer than carbs.

I opt for pieces of fresh pineapple when I get a bout of mouth ulcers; it seems to actually hasten the healing process.

You could try those little packs of scotch pancakes that you pop into the toaster to reheat. And try topping those with simple things like jam, lemon curd or marmalade.

Cheap, easily accessible from all supermarkets .... can be supersoft if barely toasted (or microwaved) ... or crispier if you toast them longer.

Pineapple is recommended for people having chemo, so I'd give that a go. I used to give my dad very thin slices of fresh pineapple, and I'd also freeze some as it helped with the soreness.

I found pineapple easy to swallow and it didn't sting, apparently it stimulates the salivary glands.

I hated the fortisips, but they do a concentrated version, I froze and made these into lollies which were easier to get down.
Surprisingly I also ate quavers and skips they melted in my mouth and didn't sting.
I also found courgette seemed to have a bland taste and easy to swallow, I would grate some, stir fry it and make an omlette often adding a spoon full of cottage cheese.
During my radiotherapy which was on my mouth, I had weekly doses of chemotherapy. I had a huge ulcer on the side of my tongue. I timed my pain meds half an hour before I wanted to eat. It helped to make sure I could get something down.
Look after yourself and ask to see a nutritionist, they can have some great ideas and advice.
  • If courgette "works" for you - then you could get a cheap spiraliser and make courgetti (ie spiralised courgettes) and use that as pasta.

I would have thought one could do, for instance, courgetti with a mushroom sauce (made with a plant milk, rather than cows milk). Not forgetting oil - instead of butter.
