What happens if you press the Windows key on your keyboard?0

Nothing. windows don't seem to start properly, visible on display is just the mouse cursor. when I do control Alt, del, it comes up with the options, in task mgr no tasks are listed.
By choosing 'change password' I managed to go on line using 'Firefox'. But then there was no start menus and programs.
so confusing.

You don't say which OS you're using but generally speaking if Windows gets it's knickers in a twist then first try starting in Safe Mode which doesn't load many of the drivers loaded in a full boot. From Safe Mode you could try using System Restore to revert back to the system files from a previous date.
Edit
Get sandwiches and coffee at the ready - it could be a long night. Good luck.Warning: In the kingdom of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

If you search the web for 'windows 7 missing start button' you get many responses, including videos of how to restore it. It's probably worth browsing through some of these and trying some recovery actions, maybe starting with the Microsoft forum ones.0

A new keyboard is cheap (less than £10) and easy to fit - this will solve your missing statt key problem !!!
