Possible disciplinary

Hi

After some thoughts and opinions. I'll try and be concise.

Essentially since being employed the company said an employee could buy 2 items from the staff shop, but the people running the shop said they could buy 4 items, however in reality they actually let them buy any amount.

My question is this: if there is a limit on items that could be purchase, and that limit is exceeded, who is responsible? is it the buyer for purchasing too many, the seller or 50/50?

Could an employee be sacked, demoted or receive a warning for buying too many?

If anyone has any thoughts / advice please share :-)

Many thanks in advance

My view is that it's two separate offences.

The buyer is 100% responsible for purchasing more of the item than they know is allowed.

The seller is 100% responsible for allowing more than the permitted number to be sold.

I'd expect both to be disciplined if it gets that far.

Yes there is a limit, it's 2. You just said that.

If you breach policy, yes you can be disciplined, which yes can lead to dismissal.
  • 👍, thank you for replying. I hadn't thought about it like that.

Is the rule buying 2 items from the staff shop in the course of one's employment or within a particular timeframe?
It might be worth asking whether the number of items bought could be increased or whether it would be fairer to use a monetary limit.

    Sounds generous.

I imagine it starts getting expensive for the employer if most employees ignored the limit of two. I'm leaning toward the shop staff being the ones to remind buyers of the limit.

  • Thanks lulu, they are actually rejects, so they would only be thrown out anyway. I was buying them to help out family (saving them money). It was wrong I admit and I've apologised. I'm just worried I could be sacked.

Let's think positive,.......you've understood you've done wrong and apologised. I would doubt that you are the only person that shop staff have allowed to buy more than two items in one week. This does indicate that those shop staff need reminding/retraining. A good outcome for you would be a written warning if you have a good employment history with your employer

What would be a problem is if the goods bought were in such a large quantity to indicate a side business selling them off. This would affect the brand and credibility of the firm amongst other things. If your employer does believe there is some collusion between yourself and the shop staff in doing this then, yes, that indicates dismissal.

  • Thanks lulu, I appreciate your replies. I was only trying to help out family by buying extra. As they were rejects and clearly marked so, it would be impossible to sell them on. My meeting is Monday. Do you think it's worth getting letters from my family to say they were for them, I suppose that a guilty person could do that though.
  • I wouldn't bother getting letters from your family. I'd just go in to the meeting and be extremely apologetic and assure them it would never be repeated.
