This scheme isn't devised by the BBC - it's written into legislation (and therefore is Government policy, which the BBC has no choice but to follow).

If you only watch commercial catch-up, Netflix/Amazon, etc. you don't need a Licence at all.

it does seem odd they don't allow monthly payment by dd of 1/12th the annual sum - they would probably find far more people paid it if they allowed this option as not everyone can afford to loan the bbc half a years fees - even council tax now allows equal monthly payments rather than payment over only 10 months like they used to insist on

and my car insurance is spread over 12 payments

Would you like to pay the same interest on your TV Licence, as you do on your car insurance?
This whole website is about streamlining finances and budgeting isn't it?

Yup. So the advice would be, if you can, pay annually. Same for your car insurance.
  • So in theory (after the initial 6 months) you could cancel your TV licence and still keep watching live TV for 6 months, because you've paid 6 months ahead?

Yes - if you ask them to do that.

When you cancel a payment scheme with TV Licensing there is usually the choice to allow your credit to run on providing a "free" Licence until expiry, or to have the credit refunded (subject to certain conditions, some of which are considered by some people to be unfair).

Obviously if you opt to cancel the Licence you would then need to find an alternative way to comply with the law.
