We had the same thing for the first year after moving in to our current home. It is a quite damp house anyway but the smell wouldn't go no matter what.

Doing a bit of DIY one day, dh broke into the fireplace area and discovered a rotting pigeon in the flue. Once that was in the bin the smell had thankfully gone.
Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These
(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

Is it definitely a damp kind of smell or could it be something like mice?

Yikes that's nasty. I'd have thought that kind of smell would have stopped after two years though.

Smells dampy/musty. We had mice when I lived at my parents' house and there's none of the telltale signs eg droppings, gnawing/noises, squeaks etc.

Is it possible that it's an ancient festering smell lurking deep in a carpet/underlay?

Maybe the water's just a red herring.... and you notice it at the sink as you've moved then stood still, but it could be the agitation by your feet on the carpet to get to that spot that caused spores to float into the air?

From outside, if I go into the porch, I can't smell anything. If I open the main front door, I can smell it. But the smell appears to disappear within minutes of being inside the house (maybe I'm no longer sensitive to it?).
