Disposing of old brake fluid?

I'll probably take it to the local recycling centre, but don't remember any particular facilities there for dealing with brake fluid. Anyone tried? I've seen some posts about just throwing it in with the waste oil, but not sure if this is correct.

Our recycling centre has a specific metal cabinet where people can dispose of random bottles of fluid which do not have there own disposal point. On ours there was sign or indication so you may have to ask
  • Ask at the recycling centre. I wouldn't put brake fluid with the used engine oil without being told to.

I'd suggest asking at your local place, individual sites may vary in where they store it.

Last time I think mine just went in with the old engine oil in a big tank.

Cheers, seems like it varies but it won't be a wasted journey. I think I may have seen a cabinet with random stuff in it, so this might be the disposal point, I'll ask🙂

    Mechanic's way:
Tray of cat litter, pour the DOT fluid into the tray, leave overnight. Solvent part of the fluid stays on the surface of the litter and evaporates if left overnight, so best to put it in a garage or shed, away from animals. What is left of the litter, can be dumped in your domestic waste bin. If you want to see how corrosive it is, pour a little onto a painted surface you don't like. By next day, paint is gone.

Some motorcycle shops will take it.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

As advised by a car magazine? http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/a329/2063646/ Its up to whoever deals with the waste to decide where to put. Brake fluid is likely to be classed as hazardous waste. Mixing it with cat litter does not make it environmentally safe.

Does your local council website provide a list of disposal locations?

  • Take it to a recycling centre. Phone your council if you are bothered about the round trip being wasted.

If you bought it from Halfords, I'd be inclined to take it back to them if they have a garage facility, as they will have facilities and they sold it to you.

I take it that you don't have a friendly garage if you are DIYing?
