WARNING: Cover your PIN!

Options
Friend shopped in large supermarket, did a big shop so had to use her pin. Left shop, got to her car, reached into shoulder bag (which she hadn't zipped up) for her keys - no purse!

Obviously immediately informed shop, police and bank and subsequently bank confirmed large sum had been withdrawn from her a/c (which they are refunding).

The police are currently viewing CCTV covering the tills to try to identify the "shoulder surfers".

Bearing in mind that in most purses there are store cards and other things with signatures on it was incredibly easy for these lowlifes to make their way to the nearest branch of her bank and withdraw this money, oh, and then went on to MacDonalds for lunch.

SO - cover up your PIN at the tills and keep all your cards separate from your purse (just in case).

Its seems innocent enough, but always be very wary of people in the queue nonchalantly playing on their phone. Very common now so you think nothing of it.

With Phone cameras now having high megapixel resolution its easy to secretly be filming you pay and zoom in enough to work out which buttons you were pressing even from an odd angle.

Always shield the pad with your other hand and try to learn to press your code with different fingers to confuse them. I always mix in a few 'pretend' press movements for good measure.

If that is what JJ Egan is suggesting, then I would suggest that they shouldn't be giving "advice" on here.

If you go shopping and have a large wad of cash which gets stolen, you have little or no chance of getting it back.
The OP on the other hand used an "insecure payment method", had they card stolen and money taken from their account yet they are getting this money refunded by their bank.

Its just that i know how insecure the card methods may be .
I have an Android app that can read many cards without access to the card .Hackers can do even more .
Large amount of cash shopping would not be the norm now would it . Not many carry £500 in the pocket to buy a few items from Tesco .

But if somebody picks your pocket and removes your cash that's the money gone, almost certainly for ever. But if it's taken from your card you can at least put up an argument with your bank for it to be repaid. I'll carry on using my cards while taking reasonable precautions (the thread title is so obvious that it's teaching granny to suck eggs) rather than spend my money on a tin hat.
