Eon heatwise help

My son has moved into a rented flat that has a heatwise five tariff meter. It is electric only with storage heaters.
I have had several conversations with eon trying to sort out the tariff.
He is on their standard tariff of £0.16 per kWh. This seems really high to me.
I thought he should be on some sort of economy 7 or economy 10 tariff but eon say he needs a new meter for that.
Eon said the meter exchange would be free but they can't tell me what the rates would be on economy 7. How can we make a decision without knowing the rate.
I have read that the flat may need rewiring for a meter change because the old meter runs different circuits at different times. Obviously it's a rented flat so not an option.
Eon said they could charge on a single rate of £0.155 per kWh but that still seems a lot.
If we can just change the meter then we could switch provider and probably get a better rate.
Does anyone know the answer to whether we can just change the meter without rewiring the flat from a 5 tariff complex meter.
Many thanks.

Unless it's a very weird arrangement, I would have thought it simple enough to rewire. Son might want to check with landlord before going ahead though.0

If your son has a Heatwise meter, why is he being charged based on a single rate tariff, rather than Eon's Heatwise tariff?
I thought that only happened if the customer specifically requested it.
Eon is ending it's Heatwise tariff, but has arrangements in place to continue to support customers affected.
You son needs to speak with Eon's specialist team who handle this type of metering.0 -
Thanks I will try to see if I can get through to a specialist heatwise person.
He was put on the standard single tariff automatically. I asked about other tariffs and they could only offer single rate tariffs with that meter.
I wasn't proposing to rewire. I suspect the housing association wouldn't be impressed.0 -
Good morning Green hopeful,
I'll pop a bit of information about about Heatwise and hope it helps a bit.
These meters were designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They’re set up to give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity during every 24 hours for heating and water heating purposes. This is spilt into 3 time slots during the afternoon, in the evening and at night. Your Heatwise is set up as part of a conventional meter and this records all other usage. This is one meter with 5 different readings.
To work, the meter will be wired directly into the heating/water heating circuits at the property. Unless manually overridden, this lets the meter automatically turn the heating on during the off peak periods and off again afterwards. During the off peak times, all electricity used for heating/water heating that goes through these dedicated circuits is recorded as separate meter readings and charged at off peak rates.
To change the meter, there may be some work needed to make sure the heating isn’t affected. Although the meter exchange will still be free, the costs of the electrician is the customer’s responsibility.
But do talk to us about the current tariff and the possibility of of a meter exchange. We do have a [FONT="]a specialist team who look after these type of meter exchanges.
You can ask to speak to the simpler metering team, or email me and I''l help you.
Thank you
Helena:)

Hi. I have an update. After quite a lot of effort I got to the bottom of this.
So heatwise meters are being phased out. This means new occupiers are not offered anything but a standard tariff if they have a heatwise meter. This is obviously not suitable for an electric only property.
So Eon will change the heatwise meter for free. Contact the simpler metering team as suggested by the eon rep above.
Eon can wire the meter so the storage heaters and immersion will only run on the economy 7 tariff. This is means they wont run in the day. This was fine for us as there are no timers so we would need to turn them on and off manually. If you wanted to be able to turn the heaters and immersion on during the day you will either need to put timers in or remember to turn things on and off.
I spoke to an electrician and he wasnt aware of any problems with having to rewire as suggested by others.
We didnt need permission from the housing association but it took them quite a while to tell us that.
The housing association had no idea that heatwise was being phased out.
Finally eon said we could switch to another provider without penalty once we had the meter changed.
If you have a heatwise meter and you are happy with a standard tariff then eon will charge all the usage at one rate but this would be very expensive for an electric only property.0
