Computer, Laptop or tablet . . . . . . . . ?

We're thinking about updating our creaking laptop and don't know whether to get another laptop or maybe purchase a tablet. We use it for email, t'interweb, writing of occasional letters and doing some spreadsheets, so Word and Excel often useful.
What do you use and can you recommend anything . . . . ? Budget up to £1000.
Laptop would be best IMO. But you don't need to spend that much to satisfy your requirements.
These, for example:

Or something that will fit your requirements but is less expensive:

You don't have to spend £1,000 to get a laptop that will suit you and do what you want. If you need extra storage and/or backup, use some of the budget for an external hard drive:

All of the above are just ideas: you might want to shop around a bit yourself.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
