procedure for certifying a loft conversion !

Our builder have just completed our loft conversion and he is getting a private building inspector, as agreed originally, to come next week to certify the work. My question is what should happen next? Do they need to submit the certificate to the Council and await a council certificate? I want to know before I make the final payment and then discover that paper work has not been completed...thanks

Be there when the inspector comes and you’ll know immediately if it is being signed off.

The certificate is issued by the inspector’s company. It doesn’t take long. They will want the electrician’s certificate provided to them first though.

There will have been more than one inspection so the process would tell you if they have been progressing nicely. It isn’t decided at the end, in fact the last inspection is probably the most cursory. They’ll be looking for smoke detectors etc.

If you have different expectations of when you pay, compared to what has been agreed already then you need to mention it now!

Thanks..The inspector has been twice and I believe he only needs all smoke alarms installed before signing off so no major worries. What I want to know is do I need any thing from the council? or is the private inspector certificate is all I need?

The private certificate is all you need.

The council are only informed, they are not involved.
