Credit Card Cash...

I have a Halifax Clarity credit card, recommended by MSE for worldwide usage. Prior to my last trip to Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Hongkong, I pre - loaded my account with the objective of eliminating any interest charges for cash withdrawals while away.
On returning home, the account still showed interest charged from the date of cash withdrawal even though my account was in credit and that I was not borrowing any money from Halifax.
On contacting Halifax, the agent said that ‘this is not a bank account and you should’nt pre load it’. I asked if this was in the terms and conditions and the agent said it wasn’t. He was obviously floundering a bit and said they would reimburse the interest charge (£1.34!)
By pre - loading the account, I thought I would not incur any interest as I was not borrowing any money. Can anyone throw any light on this?

  • You shouldn't have incurred interest. Check whether you went into a debit situation at any point.

However, you shouldn't have loaded the card - avoid doing it in the future as you have you card blocked. The agent was correct, but should have pointed you to the terms that read something like -

You must make at least the minimum payment by the payment due date if there is a balance payable to us on your statement. You can always pay more than the minimum payment at any time, including repaying everything you owe.

You must not pay us more than you owe when you make payments to your account, or transfer funds from another credit or store card if this creates a credit balance on your account. If there is a credit balance on your account at any time, we may apply it to any recent transactions not yet shown on your account, or to transactions made after the date your account goes into credit. We may also return any credit balance to the account from which the money has been sent or pay the funds into a deposit account you hold with us. We do not pay interest on any credit balances or take them into account for the purpose of any reward schemes.

  • Was there a positive balance all the time including after any purchases?

I'm going to guess the answer is "no"!

So you've got one of the best cards for international travel and you risked having it blocked for the sake of saving £1.34?
