Anyone know why wifi doesn't work?

I have wifi in the house, my phone hooks up to it, my friends' iPads do as well, but I recently bought a second hand laptop and it doesn't.
When I open the network and sharing centre and click on wireless settings, I get the router device come up and it says on there 'connect automatically' but I can never use the wifi.
As soon as I take the lead out I go offline.
Is there something simple I'm not aware of
Thanks

On some laptops there's a hardware switch controlling wifi.0

Why can you not use the wifi? What does it say?
What lead are you taking out? Do you mean the ethernet cable?0 -

Yes as soon as I take that cable out there's a red cross where the internet symbol is (the bars showing how much connection there is). If I click on it it says no connections are available.
If I open the network and sharing centre and click on 'connect to wireless network' it just takes me back to the message of there being no internet connection available....0 -
That indicates you are connecting via an ethernet cable. There will be a way of connecting wirelessly rather than via that cable.
See above post, is your laptop's wireless interface switched on?
Best post make model of laptop and operating system you are using to get detailed help.0 -
Toshiba Satellite Pro...
Windows 7...I'm not techie at all, so if that's the wrong answer it won't surprise me, lol0 -
If it's a new router and an old laptop then they may be operating different wifi standards, and if so there's no way it'll connect, you might need to buy a modern wifi dongle.0

You need to select the SSID from the list and then insert the password when asked. Possibly not WIFI ready so dongle needed. Possibly FN F8 if it is indeed wifi enabled but the wifi is switched off.0

Also when I reload Win7 I had to load all the drivers manually so may need drivers from Toshiba website.
