I really do feel that it's just plain greedy to demand thousands of pounds from a leasholder that's converted the loft, when really the space is of no use to anyone else.

Property costs money
You think it's not greedy that the leaseholder was saying that the freeholder actually owed money for work that he had carried out? If he hadn't have been greedy, the freeholder would have been none the wiser as to her rights.
If I have land, just because I don't want to build a house on it, it doesn't mean that I can't sell it to someone else for the full value as building land. It certainly doesn't mean that someone else can steal it from me, build on it and then expect me to not only give them the land for free becuase of their hard work, but then pay toward the costs of doing it!? That is greed. And theft. It's illegal.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

We're not talking about LAND here. We're talking about roof space!!

Rubbish. It will have a major effect on the value of the leaseholder's property and the freeholder is quite entitled to charge for selling it. The fact that only one leaseholder can benefit from developing it is irrelevant.Trying to keep it simple...

Sounds like the words of a freeholder to me. It's completely unreasonable and immoral in my opinion; people like that really ought to be ashamed of themselves.0 -

Your words could also be construed as those from a leaseholder who may have illegally converted a loft and then tried to bully, manipulate and lie to their freeholder!
The loft is a potential building plot. The flat was sold on a lease, the loft was not. He doesn't own it, it is not his. You then don't try to manipulate the freeholder and then get surprised when they seek legal advise from their own solicitor and a government funded body.
Whether or not you like isn't the issue.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
