Child Putting Gloves On By Themselves

Hi there,

I wondered if anyone could perhaps share how they helped their own children with the issue I have.

My son is 4 yrs nearly 5yrs and now needs hat, gloves and a scarf for school.

Prior to this year because my son couldn't put gloves on by himself I bought him mittens but I think now he is at school he really does need to learn how to put gloves on by himself.

I tried at the weekend of trying to explain how to put them on but each time he looked like he was a "star trek" supporter:rotfl:

Any tips would be gratefully received so I don't collaspe into heaps of giggles each time he tries:D

Thanks in anticipation:A

  • How about turning the gloves halfway-inside out, so that he can see every finger hole, and put his fingers in separately, and then unfold it over his hand? This is how I learned to put socks on by myself without the heels going all twisted!
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right
  • Rather than starting with the thick snow proof gloves how about starting with some basic wool ones or even some fingerless gloves, so they are nice and thin, I think you will probably have to help a few times but try making it fun. The whole oh look there one finger through wheres then next one hiding, has he gone down the wrong hole, quick get him out of there.

Once he's done it with you a few times or even better seen some of the other kids at school doing it, he will catch on.

    Thanks for those,

I had never thought of the turning the gloves half way so he can see the fingers. What a brilliant idea.:j

The gloves are quite thin wool. I suppose it would help if I didn't fall about laughing when he gets it wrong.:D He does look like a "trekky" though.:rotfl:

Get him to rub his hands in talc (or cornflour!) before he starts - that way his fingers are nice and dry and slip in more easily. Practice with some old (preferably not tight!) washing up gloves as they are big enough for a bit of manouvering, and not a problem if they get damaged.....

  • My 8yo still can't do gloves - even though he's competent at most things. I knit him mittens as it's quite difficult to get mittens in the right size.

You can get fingerless gloves with a mitten bit that folds over the top to cover the fingers up too. So they can see where their fingers are going, but keep them warm too.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • When I was little, my mum got me some gloves with faces on, and we named them. And I learnt that each face went on a different finger

  • Oh yeah! You could do that rhyme .... we used to do a rhyme in nursery about the different fingers, Rosie Ring, Peter Pointer ..... can't remember the rest though :(

  • I remember that rhyme :D

    Tommy Thumb,
    Tommy Thumb
    Where are you?
Here I am, here I am,
    How do you do?

(Repeat the verse and substitute "Tommy Thumb" with 'Peter Pointer, ''Toby Tall", "Ruby Ring", "Baby Finger". End with "Finger Family - here we are.")
