Ovo used to say which suppliers could use their smart meters but they don't now. I contacted a couple of them and although the meters were the same they had different ways of using them as matelodave has explained.

This is Ovo's latest advice https://www.ovoenergy.com/ovo-answers/topics/smart-technology/smart-meters/can-i-switch-energy-suppliers-with-smart-meter.html

OVO still say on their website that their meters will remain smart if you switch to E.On, First Utility, or Utilita.

If you are considering moving to one of these suppliers, then give them a call and ask them.

... the only two companies who's smart meters will work with each other are British Gas & Sainsbury's and that's because BG supply Sainsbury's and do their billing.

Not true, because they are not different companies. Sainsbury's Energy is a British Gas brand.

If you buy you energy from Sainsbury's Energy, you are a British Gas customer.

"Our general supply terms and conditions

    What this is

These are our terms and conditions for supplying Sainsbury's Energy gas or electricity (or both) to your property. They form a contract between us – British Gas – and you, our customer. We are licensed by Sainsbury's to use the Sainsbury's Energy brand to supply gas and electricity."

BG smart meters will work smart with Sainsburys Energy. I ve been with both of them and we also read the same two suppliers meters at the same time.
Sainsburys is known as a "white label " supplier. They both use the same call centres, same sales staff, same meter readers.Sainsburys is BG in disguise.
It was a BG marketing plan to use the good name of Sainsburys .
It worked very well until OFGEM stuck its oar in and banned "white label " cheaper tariffs. BG from offering the low "no frills " tariffs with Sainsburys and so had to drop it and offer the same as BG.
When I used Sainsburys they were the cheapest Tariffs in the UK for me.I switched , exit free, from a BG collective to an even cheaper deal
SSE and Marks and Spencers operate the same.
The only thing is that the IHD with Sainsburys loses some functions , thats if you havent binned the useless thing. The meters are remotely read though.I can vouch for that having spent two years with Sainsburys and BG

In terms of Sainsbury's Energy being a brand name for British Gas, you've added nothing to my post. Nor have you disagreed with it. I'm not sure why you have quoted me!

Probably for the same reason that you felt you needed to correct my stsement about them
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

I corrected your statement because it was erroneous.

Look Nick, I know you are a johnny- come- lately to the Energy board, but we regulars on here are well aware of everything to do with Sainsburys and its relationship to BG . for the last 5 years at least we have been posting about this.
I just thought I d add a few extra points which are important especially the bit about OFGEM blundering in stopping BG from offering very cheap tariffs via Sainsburys Energy
They were one of the best /cheapest in the UK, well run and far better than the Iresa s/Bulbs and any of the here today gone tomorrow little fish who no one can contact and who make it very hard to recover your cash when they switch, mainly because they are so hard to contact via email or phone.
Sainsburys, using the well staffed large efficient B.G. call centres would answer within a minute or two. Iresa answer ,,never ! We run out of patience after 2 hours on hold and slam the phone down, They are cheap for a reason, they don t employ many staff to deal with problems.
OFGEM did it again ! They knew BG were too big if Sainsburys were included so stopped a really top deal.
By the way I still think Ovo are lying/erroneous on their website when they say their smart meters will work smart if someone switches to Utilita, First Utility, or Eon.
Ovo on their website, also add that if anyone switches from these suppliers to Ovo using Secure meters they will NOT work smart with them. very odd !

Now that is interesting, because your user details say you joined the forum in May this year. So I guess your earlier AEs were PPRd. Was this for calling other posters liars and thieves by any chance?

I have been a regular user of this site for over ten years. I skim all the boards and post on topics that interest me or where I can give advice.

But I think people who have only just joined the forum are just as welcome as anyone else.

. I have never called any forum members thieves and liars. You crossed swords with me a few times about a TV licence thread . You objected to my company , MDS ,getting behind the doors of people who claimed not to need a TV licence and therefore see that in fact they were actually viewing TV without a licence .

I do remember YOU making an odd statement that if I was delivering a TV licence reminder it is "harrassing people " .
I see the truth behind many of those who claim to not need a TV licence as I also read their utility meters and see their TV sets on viewing both BBC and live scheduled TV... I have called these people "liars " many times and will continue to do that because that is exactly what they are
220,000 went to court last year accused of TV licence evasion which proves just how widespread the problem is. If there are few careful "moneysavers " on here who have taken that as a personal insult, well thats tough
I have definitely called people who tamper with meters and extract free energy "thieves " and I have called the people who I see evading the TV licence on my rounds liars..Any problem with that ?. Please do not make any further comments about me calling forum members liars or thieves if you don`t mind . If you do I will complain to the mods about this.
You are quite welcome to comment on the Energy board but when you start posting links about something the regulars are well aware of it gets a bit boring
My partner died last year so I made a new start with another username as my old one had a reference to her in the username .. I ve mentioned this a few times last year
Why don`t you make some enquiries yourself about whether or not Ovo are lying/misinformed about their Secure smart meters working smart with other suppliers who use Secure meters instead of getting peeved about my posts on TV licence fiddlers and meter tamperers. I know you defended yourself If I remember correctly because you said you do not need a TV licence.
Good for you,..you re missing a lot of top telly from the BBC and live scheduled TV on all the channels . I could nt live like that with just American Netflix, Amazon Prime and catch up tv just to save £2.80 a week

Your opinion that Secure meters are rubbish is not based on fact.

More suppliers like eon are using Secure meters because they offer better value for money and they enable a more cost effective rollout of smart meters which we are all paying having to pay for.

    :naughty:

This appears to be a more acceptable meter as its more compact then the L&G E470.The secure doesn't have the burden of the external Trilliant hub which the cable is to short to neatly place horizontal over the meter and appears an untidy install in some wall cupboards. Here its tidy as there is more room.
