We were in Edinburgh last week and stayed in the Apex City Hotel in Grassmarket, about a 10-15 minute walk to Princess Street, very nice hotel, the room was lovely.

This is one of the places that has mucked me around in the past - took my booking at a reasonable price but just before I was due to go, got in touch saying there was a 'problem' and offered me the same room for several hundred pounds more or alternative accommodation in a vermin-infested hole some miles away.

They were also very slow to refund my card when I told them where to shove-it. Got a TL in Livingston instead and just drove to and from the city.

Its not just places like Apex that are in on this scam - Over the years, I've had similar from long-established major names to simple rooms above pubs. Never had this in any other city in the world or from a chain.

OP would you consider posting this in the UK Holidays, Days Out and Entertainment subforum where you may get more replies?

The central travelodges can be a bit 'hen-night hell' though, I agree - stayed in the airport one a few months back and it was surprisingly fine/quiet but despite being near the trams, it may be a bit too far?

I've stayed in Edinburgh alot, and of all the Travelodges and Premier Inns (of which there are now many) I'd probably only recommend the Airport Travelodge (which is clean, quiet and well-run) and the Haymarket Premier Inn (the purpose-built one opposite Haymarket Station).

They both have their shortcomings (for example, the Airport TL is in the middle of nowhere, with no other amenities close by and the rooms are small). There is a McDonalds a few minutes drive away, for a choice of breakfast options.

Where is the Premier Inn opposite Haymarket?

Probably, perhaps, maybe the one that's roughly half way between Haymarket and Waverley stations?

D'oh, it's been sold, and is now the Leonardo Royal Hotel.

I have to say that despite their blandness, travelodge/chain-type places have one big plus in their favour - reliability.

I have never been mucked about on a booking by them in the same way that seems to be routine with city-based hotels, who always seem to find some 'problem' that can only be solved by your paying more or accepting a poorer quality alternative like a guesthouse in the sticks. :(

I don't stay in them often but relatives do, have stayed in ones that have had dirt on walls, last occupiers take away cartons, sauces on carpet and bed.

Travelodge as a whole varies on the location, often if you book in advance they aren't the cheapest either.

Worst we went to was in uttoxeter, ripped sheets, matress falling apart, cracks in tiles.

Premier inn relatives never had a problem with I have never stayed in one though.
