    For comparison, what would be your thoughts on HL 'Conservative' ready made portfolio or Bestinvest 'Growth' ...I assume some additional cost but bearing in mind my lack of understanding of investing?

    Excellent cash cows for HL or Bestinvest. They will be very happy you use those. Not for the investor though.

    I refer back to my earlier comment about DIY and advice. Your options are costing you more than using an IFA. The point of DIY is getting good options cheaper. Not getting bad options more expensive.

    Vanguard Life Strategy is a range of ready made funds that mixes various Vanguard index funds. I am all for the OP DIYing, but to do that you need some basic understanding of investment principals so that even with a very simple portfolio you can manage it sensibly.
