Lukewarm - warm water. Put in Kettle, pour on icy windows.
Wipe off all water.
Extremely simple, extremely effective, and free.
Exactly!
This Thread takes me back to where I used to live about 35 years ago, next door to the village idiot, who regularly carried out stupid actions, many times a week. He saw me go out with warm water and do as Zola describes, then start the car with the heater and demisters on full blast, before gradually decreasing the heaters. The idiot went back and came out with a bucket of obviously very hot, steaming water, grinned at me and threw it all onto his windscreen. CRACK! and the ice was no longer a problem, but the cracks across the top layer of laminations, was. I had to go inside, my sides were killing me.
A couple of years later he was arrested for drunken driving and assaulted two large coppers in an attempt to get away. Being about 5'6" and 8 stone wet through, he did not succeed and was Her Majesty's guest for some time. The entertainment value on our street was reduced.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Ahem, well to be pedantic, you're paying to heat the water, and you might be paying for the water via a meter.
And
Mostly agree - in your own home. I still carry de-icer in the car, because you could be caught out and about with no access to water.De-icer is a waste of money, that simple.0
