Giving Notice to Marry

Anyone know if you need to do this to get married in America? I am reading conflicting information online - my partner believes you must give notice 28 days before you intend to marry, but I understand this as being only meaningful if you are getting married in the UK.

I can never get through to the CAB and the local registrars never ever reply nor take calls!

  • Friend of my brother's had a "drive thru'" wedding in Las Vegas, conducted by "Elvis". Pretty sure they got the licence and got married on the same day,

A bit of googling suggests the office the sells the licences is open to midnight and there's no residency requirement or waiting period. Note that's one city, other cities / states may be different because I think this is a state rather than federal matter, so you may well get conflicting information depending on which state the information applies to.

It depends where you want to get married. The requirements are different in each state and in some cases it varies depending which county you are in. Once you know where you want to get married, contact the County Clerk's office and ask them.

My brother is thinking of getting married in Boston in 2019 and they said you apply at city hall 3 days later licence is ready or that was my understanding when speaking to him

  • It's the giving notice in the UK that is confusing me. I know we need a licence out there, that's fair enough. But, do you still need to give notice like you would do if you were getting married in the UK?

We live in the UK, we are going to New York in February 18. She now wants to get married whilst we are out there.

I know we would have to give notice to get married in the UK, but I don't know if this still stands for wanting to get married over there

Why not contact the American Embassy in London and ask them. There may be different rules for different states and they could perhaps advise you of any specific documentation yiu might need to take with you if you are not US citizens.

You don't have to give notice in the UK that you intend to get married in the US, which is what I think you are asking.

As previously said, different States in America, have different rules about what you need to do in order to marry there. You need to find out what you need to do in order to marry in the particular state you wish to marry in.

You need to check whether the place you are marrying need to see a "Certificate of no Impediment" .... if they do, you get one from the registrar in the Uk, and the process is essentially the same as giving notice to marry.

It depends on the state - check on their individual website.
I got married in Nevada and got out license around a day or 2 before (but could have been done later!). It all depends where.
