I just don't let it bother me anymore and it's fine, it is stupid anyway cause you only work yourself up! - I just do my work and make sure i am not doing anything wrong, and they can do whatever they want to do

Which is exactly the attitude I took those several months ago when I realised that there is not much point to worry too much and work extra hard for all of this. But as you can imagine, if a strong work ethic and a hard working attitude is deeply embedded into your personality, it can take a long time to change it rather than overnight.

Leave it be, IMO play along and be nice, remember, you need a reference from them so dont burn bridges. HR will side with management over staff usually so be careful with what you say to them.

Be glad you are not her then, it WILL catch up with her. When manager leaves or when she is made redundant and ends up working in the real world.

I agree. It is just a shame that people who are really good at their work and are valuable employees to the company are slowly but surely driven out and eventually look for something else. People often say that atmosphere is far more important in the work place than, say, work etiquette. I used to say that too. But through this experience I now know that far more important than the atmosphere is for me to work with people who actually give a damn and management who genuinely encourages people to grow and provide support on their way. An atmosphere is much easier to be built along the way than someone's approach to their duties.

I know! I was surprised as well. The only reason I can think of was that I really dont get into all of that office gossip talk etc. and had a long probationary. Only shortly after that when I had my own experience with him, I started talking to people who I thought had a similar reserved approach to him and they told me their own stories. The problem is that even if he doesnt always play by the book he does it in a dont ask dont tell manner so apart from the person involved, no one wuld normally know that he treated someone much getter than you in exact same situation.

    missed the point.......
In my experience most people know what's going on, those being supervised the peers and the bosses.

no point trying to stir things up they already know.

you don't need gossip, just being aware of what's going on around you and these things stand out very quickly.

Sounds to me like you're struggling to deal with a fairly typical working environment, and that's based only on your version of things. I can only imagine how it would look if we heard the various other sides of this.

I really wish it was just me having that problem. I can honestly say that he is good at the operational level but in terms of managing people, his practices are very poor.

You get managers who are good operationally, and managers who are really good at managing people. Those who are equally good at both are quite rare. When I moved into my first managerial / supervisory role I was given no official training and just had to do what I thought was right. Did I always get it right in other people's eyes? Probably not.
Going back to your example of a person regularly arriving late and leaving early, it's possible that there are things going on outside work, of which your manager has more knowledge than you, which validates their treatment. I don't know if that's the case any more than you do.
  • Managers aren't robots, they're people who have flaws. I think if you're leaving anyway you're best to just keep your head down and don't get consumed in every little thing the manager does. Negativity like that isn't good for you.

.......my opinion of him changed when I had a serious battle some time ago with my then manager and him as a senior back then. They both tried to brush me off even though I was certain I am right. I asked them at the end to escalate my complaint to their manager and the next day I got a response that I was right and will be compensated for the error they made.........

That's a very rare quality in any manager, admitting that they were wrong and willing to compensate you for their error.

And since this event you've only spoken to the manager about work and nothing social or polite?

Sulking or revenge is never an attractive quality, I hope you'll learn from it in your next job.

It was their manager who took my side (to my surprise even though I was right) he (in his senior role back then) and my then manager both tried to brush me off and especially the senior (who is now temporarily acting as a manager) did not show me any support but was happy to throw me under the bus even though he and the rest of the team benefitted from my doing.

One point from personal experience OP, HR don't give a stuff about employees. Don't even bother going to them, you're simply wasting your breath.

Where I currently work the management setup is highly toxic but I just do whats needed to stay under the radar and seem to get along with them fine. If you're not willing to be flexible to fit in, (I'm not saying it's right), then you're probably going to be happier and healthier in another job.

  • It doesn't sound fair but it is perfectly legal.

I also think you have to be aware of the circumstances. If the person who arrives late works hard and is otherwise an excellent employee, I think they deserve more latitude than someone who doesn't work so hard during the working day.

I agree. In my experience many people make the mistake of thinking that "fairly" means the same as "equally". ie if it's not equal then it can't be fair. But it ain't necessarily so...in any aspect of life but particularly at work.
