iCloud storage prompts

I keep getting prompts that I haven't got enough storage space on iCloud and I need to upgrade; yet I have 1.3 gb available out of 5 gb free still .... This only occurred when I upgraded my new iPad to the latest 2017, not that it should make a difference ! But anyways I can rectify this as I'm confused when I've got space that I'm being prompted with this msg? How can I solve it?

It’s because the space available is insuficient to back up your iPad. Either get rid of stuff on the iPad, or pay the 79 pence a month for 50Gb storage.0
